Introduction to the film "Conviction," showing at the Taos Mountain Film Festival, Oct. 5, 2007: Three nuns were charged after entering the grounds of the missile silo northeast of Greeley, Colorado in October 2002. They cut two gate chains and a fence, then symbolically tapped hammers on the rusted railroad tracks used to transport the missile. They also drew six crosses on the concrete silo dome with their own blood. When military officials arrived, they found the nuns singing and praying. They were Dominican Sisters Ardeth Platte, Carol Gilbert and Jackie Hudson. Since submitting the plans to do community-service work in lieu of paying restitution, the nuns say they've continued work to help the poor and promote peace that they began in prison. They figure they've done more than 148 years of combined community service, including counseling inmates and raising 0000 in charitable contributions for literacy programs, soup kitchens and aid for victims of disasters. They asked a judge whether they could continue that work rather than paying the Air Force for the damage they did to the silo. The judge decided not to accept their plans. Federal prosecutors have insisted that the nuns make amends directly to the Air Force. But they won't. They said they will not pay a military system they consider immoral.
